Channel 5 UK goes file-based with complianceSuiteFC

Major UK commercial broadcaster Channel Five has taken delivery of 29 Eyeheight complianceSuiteFC modules as a key component of its move to file-based post-production and transmission. A modular suite of plug-ins for Apple's Final Cut platform, complianceSuiteFC incorporates the legalEyesFC video legaliser and safeEyesFC safe-area generator. Once installed, both become seamlessly accessible from the Final Cut user interface.
"The complianceSuiteFC plug-ins enable our post-production staff to ensure that programmes and interstitials conform fully to the video signal parameters specified by our transmission service-providers," explains Chris Anning, Channel Five Television Group CTO. "They provide accurate limiting when necessary to ensure gamut compliance yet keep the full video dynamic range available. The safeEyesFC element allows us to generate safe-area markers and make pixel-accurate text height measurements for commercials compliance."
Designed for operation in HD and SD, legalEyesFC supports all combinations of file format and source colour-space recognised by Final Cut. It provides composite (PAL, NTSC or NTSC 0IRE setup), RGB, native EBU-R103 and simultaneous composite+RGB legalisation, all with user-adjustable soft clipping on high and low thresholds. Eyeheight's proprietary 'clobberRing' algorithm also reduces luminance overshoots commonly seen on computer-generated or highly graded footage.
The safeEyesFC element of complianceSuiteFC allows the display mode of each marker to be independently configured for optimal comprehension. Cursors can be viewed within the Final Cut GUI and displayed on any external monitor. safeEyesFC comes with over 100 preconfigured markers covering all SMPTE, EBU, ITU-R and ARIB requirements. Administrators can modify the markers available to users, add new custom markers or restrict access. An integral measurement tool provides a simple and reliable way to check text height for regulatory compliance. The measured area is clearly indicated with user-selectable colour, style and opacity.
